Getting started

Wikai turns your sources into a linked Markdown wiki on your disk. This page takes you from download to your first answer.

Install

Download the installer for your platform from the download page and run it. Wikai is a desktop app — there’s nothing to sign up for, and your wiki never leaves your machine.

System support today: macOS (Apple Silicon), Windows 10/11 (x64), and Linux (x86_64).

First run

The first time you open Wikai, it creates a wikis folder for you — Documents/Wikai — and opens on an empty home screen with the chat sidebar beside it. Everything Wikai writes lives in that folder as plain Markdown. If you’d rather keep it somewhere else, change it under Settings → Wikis folder; the change takes effect immediately.

If Wikai found an agent on your machine (Claude Code or Codex), the sidebar is ready to talk. If not, it says so and links to the agent settings — see The chat sidebar.

Create a wiki

From the home screen, choose Create a new wiki. Give it a title — Wikai derives the slug from it (lowercase, hyphens — e.g. De Bello Gallico becomes de-bello-gallico), which is the folder name on disk. You can edit the slug, or skip the title and type only a slug. A title with no Latin letters in it derives nothing, and the dialog asks you for a slug; a slug has to start with a letter. Wikai scaffolds the folder structure and drops you on the new wiki’s (empty) landing page.

Ingest your first source

Drop a file onto the wiki — an EPUB, a PDF, a DOCX — or paste a web link. Wikai reads it end to end and writes linked pages into your wiki. See Ingesting sources for the formats and details.

Ask your first question

Open the chat sidebar (top-right) and ask something about what you just added. The agent answers grounded in your wiki and can draft or edit pages for you. First time?
